    This week, HKANC is delighted to co-host our first virtual mixer with the Hong Kong Association of Southern California (HKASC) on Zoom. Although the pandemic has limited many in-person events, we are excited to see more than 40 members and Board directors have joined this event from different locations. With a diverse group of participants, this mixer has provided an excellent opportunity to meet new friends, explore business and career opportunities, and gain insights from the industry leaders in a lighthearted environment We look forward to organizing more innovative programs that facilitate business and career opportunities between the local community and Hong Kong.   • Webinar Recap | Jul 1 | Travel Industry Outlook under Covid-19

    This week, we had a panel discussion with featured speakers, Kevin Carroll, President & CEO of the Hotel Council SF and Melinda Yee Franklin, Managing Director, Corporate & Government Affairs at United Airlines. We talked about the latest Covid-19 updates from the hotel and aviation industry, tips on traveling, and the future of travel. This webinar is moderated by Kory Lam, HKANC board of director, and secretary. 1. Latest COVID-19 updates from hotel and aviation industry Melinda said airlines' first priority is to keep the travelers safe. They have introduced new policies to lower the spread of the viruses, which include, Pre-boarding health questionnaires, a touchless check-in process, extensive cleaning procedures, minimal F&B services, and less flight capacity, etc. They also enforce the travelers to wear a mask and practice social distancing in the airport. Kevin mentioned tourism is one of the biggest industries in San Francisco. A lot of hotels have been suffered a massive hit from this pandemic, 25,000 hotel employees are severely affected by it, There are a handful of hotels that are opened during the pandemic to serve the first responders, and hotels are working closely with the City of SF to ensure carrying proper guidelines and standards. He also mentioned the cleanliness is crucial to the San Francisco tourism industry, and conferences and business travelers are the primary income source. 2. Plans on the reopening Kevin mentioned the hotel industry is ready to reopen for tourism in Mid-August 2020, the hotels will ensure the hotel guests can have a safe experience during the stays. Melinda said United Airlines restarts the routes to Asia, including Hong Kong in July ever since the service suspension in March and more routes will be reopened gradually. 3. Now and future Kevin said that the hotel experience will be completely different after the pandemic. He also said the room price might have short-term adjustment after the reopening, in order to recover from the previous economic loss. He further explained there are higher expenses on maintaining the hotel cleanliness, and relatively low demands and income. 4. Tips to travelers Melinda suggested the travelers should visit airlines' websites to read about the latest updates and requirements, as the guidelines and policies vary between airlines. She also encouraged travelers to prepare their own food and beverage on the flight due to the limited F&B service. Kevin suggested the travelers should educate themselves about the safety measurements. At the end of the webinar, both panelists reassured that the hotel and aviation industry is ready for the upcoming travelings, and they hold optimistic for future plans. San Francisco Market Dynamics In this session, Jay talked about how San Francisco compares the cost of living to the other major cities in the states in the 2020 Q1.     It was a great pleasure hosting Mr. Ivanhoe Chang, Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO SF) and Mr. Lawrence Chiu, Officer-In-Charge of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC LA) for our second webinar - Hong Kong in response to COVID-19 on May 19. This 45 minutes webinar was moderated by Ms. Kory Lam, the HKANC current board member and Vice President cluster Branch Manager of HSBC Bank (USA) N.A. During this webinar, Ivanhoe shared several updates on the Hong Kong pandemic overview with supplemental graphics and charts. Given the fact of Hong Kong's successful containment of COVID-19, he further explained key measures and policies that the Hong Kong government implemented.     This week, we had the opportunity to partner with Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP and Travelers Insurance Company presenting a webinar titled: New Employment Law Exposures & Considerations Arising From The COVID-19 Pandemic. Here are some key takeaways from the webinar. 1. New Wage & Hour Law Issues In this webinar, we've walked through some Timekeeping Issues Arising Out of the Compressed Shift to Telework, including minimum wages, business expense reimbursement and teleworking agreements, etc. We also discussed the potential expenses raised from the pandemic, like network and PPE. 2. New Paid Leave Issues We've discussed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) which is applicable to employers with fewer than 500 employees, and qualifying reasons for leaves for those employees who are affected by the COVID-19. Rob and Joe from Lewis Brisbois further explained the entitlements and how the calculations work for the leave. 3. New Workplace Safety Issues Have a better understanding of OSHA and Worker's compensation plan's requirements for the necessary reimbursements. 4. New Layoff & Furlough Issues Joe, Rob, and Anna explained the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (“WARN”) Act and California WARN Act which expands to company with 75 or more employees and includes part-time employees. 5. New Disability Accommodation Issues, New Discrimination & Harassment Issues Panelists highlighted the importance of Continued Timely Training in regards to the disability accommodation, discrimination, and harassment issues. Wrap up This was an in-depth webinar that offered a ton of information for how businesses in different sizes navigate during this pandemic and moving forward. Reopening into the “new normal” will be a work in progress for everyone, including employers.
